Creating Positive Mealtimes

Healthy eating is about more than what's on your child's plate, it's about how they experience mealtimes. When children feel relaxed, connected and free from pressure, they're more likely to explore new foods, trust their hunger and fullness cues, and develop a positive relationship with eating. Rather than focusing on how much or what your child is eating, try to focus on creating an environment where learning about food happens naturally.

Research consistently shows that regular family meals support children's nutrition, confidence around food, language development and emotional wellbeing. They also provide valuable opportunities for children to learn by watching others enjoy a variety of foods. The goal isn't a perfect family dinner every night—it's creating enjoyable moments together that are fun, relaxed, and make everyone look forward to coming to the table.

One of the easiest ways to reduce pressure is to shift the focus away from eating and onto connection. Talk about your day, tell stories, play simple games or ask fun questions that keep children engaged and make mealtimes something they look forward to.

For many parents and carers, though, this doesn't always come naturally. We may have grown up in households where children were expected to sit quietly and eat, with little conversation around the table. Or perhaps after a long day of work, school drop-offs and everything else life throws our way, we simply don't have the energy to think of engaging conversation starters. That's exactly why I created my Mealtime Talk Cards. They're packed with playful prompts and simple food exploration activities that make it easy to spark conversation, encourage curiosity and create fun, low-pressure mealtimes that the whole family can enjoy.
